There has been a lot of talk in the media recently about cancer. However, to this day the number one killer in the UK is heart disease. I’ve seen lots of people with heart attacks and to be blunt it’s devastating to see.

A heart attack occurs when there is a blockage of the arteries that supply the muscle of the heart. In many cases, it can kill instantly. They are classified as either regional in the sense that only a part of the heart’s muscles are deprived of blood. Or they are circumferential in that the blockage affects a ring of the muscle.

So what puts you at risk of a heart attack? The answer is simple. HARD SOFT SEX.

Hard soft sex is an acronym for.

High Blood pressure.

Age.

Raised low density cholesterol levels.

Diabetes Mellitus. This appears to be the fastest growing cause.

Smoking. This- in times gone by was the commonest thing that put you at risk. Ironically a life-threatening heart attack is the number one thing that makes smokers give up, second only to a diagnosis of cancer.

Obestiy.

Family history.

Testosterone (i.e. being male.)

Stress

Exercise (lack of.)

Meat. It’s far less common among vegetarians.

Now how does it present?

Well, it can present with simple indigestion. It can be silent and have no symptoms. The classical history is a fast onset of a constant severe crushing pain which starts in the central chest and spreads to the left arm. It’s made worse by movement.

If you experience such symptoms then dial the emergency services fast and put 150mg of aspirin under your tongue and chew it.

Over the next few days I’ll be telling you how to reduce your risk of a heart attack.
